Chinese Tour bus crashes into the ocean in Pattaya

This is the funniest thing that has been reported lately. The Nation  reports that the Chinese tourists panicked after their bus drove down the beach and into the  waves. Some reportedly fainted. The exact facts are not known but they were allegedly going downhill to a massage parlour when the brakes failed at around 10.30pm opposite Soi Na Klua 18 (which is north of Pattaya).

Bus driver Thaweechokchai Plaengthaisong, 49, said he was taking the group to a massage parlour in the area. The road was steep and the brakes were unable to slow it down.

He tried unsuccessfully to change down to a lower gear to slow the bus, which hit a parked pickup truck and plunged onto the beach, where it stopped on the edge of the sea.

all very droll, but it could likely be a true story. Chinese tour buses clog the streets of Pattaya and often the safety standards, especially mechanical maintenance items, might not be up to expected standards. However, if you are familiar with Chinese roads then it is unlikely that anything in Thailand would scare you. Just check out this video of a car cutting off a truck carrying gravel.

traffic accidents are unfortunately common in Thailand where efforts by the government have not been successful in cutting the road toll. social attitudes towards drink driving are still relatively permissive and in Pattaya it is unfortunately a relatively common occurrence. the police often take a fine of 10,000 baht or more rahter than referring drivers to the official court system for formal punishment.

Luckily for the passengers in this bus that they came to a stop on the beach and the vehicle didnt rollover. it easily could have resulted in many injuries or fatalities. this is part of the reason why Thailand is now considering introducing compulsory travel insurance, because tourists are so frequently ending up in hospitals with large bills to pay. we recommend for any international travel that you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers you for medical treatment and possibly evacuation to your home country.
