Sex on the beach, Pattaya

well, it seems that the Daily Mail has dug up another story about drunk foreigners behaving silly in Pattaya. In this case a man and a woman from the UK were seen having sex in the water of Pattaya beach. They were fined 1000 baht each, which is not very much, but also lost a lot of dignity. they were escorted naked from the beach to the police station on soi 9. maybe not so embarrasing if you are drunk but in the morning you wouldn’t want to see your face splashed across the tabloids, as well as your naked buttocks.

Lt. Col. Sombat Kaewmuang, Deputy Inspector of Investigations, said: ‘Police received a report at 2.30am on July 23 that one male and one female tourist were naked together on Pattaya beach. Reports were they were having sex.

‘Both Thai and foreign tourists had gathered around them. Police checked and both the man and woman were intoxicated.

Personally I wouldnt go in the water at Pattaya bay. it’s very heavily polluted with rubbish and glass, not to mention rats and cockroaches. there are many other places in THailand that have far more attractive beaches than Pattaya. I would recommend heading south to one of the popular islands such as Koh Phangan, Koh Lanta, Phuket, … the list goes of on places in THailand with nice clean beaches. Some are even deserted enough that y ou could probably get away with a little amorous activity. even the nearby Koh Larn can provide an easy getaway destination with nice beaches and it’s just a short ferry trip from Pattaya Bali Hai pier.

the punishments for tourists are generally small in monetary terms such as in this case, 1000 thb is around 23 pounds sterling. however it remains a common practice to force foreigners to make a public apology in which their full name and picture is published. obviously this could have ramifications for your future career prospects moreso than a small fine. this was the case for example of some backpackers in Chiang Mai last year who were fined and made to apologise publically for disrespectful behaviour around Songkran, that is, they were not wearing shirts. this might be considered normal in many countries however it is not acceptable at the time.

one area where the fines are not small is drink driving. police will ask for on the spot fines of 10,000-20,000 regardless of Thai or foreign nationality, and if going to court, you can also face jail time. the death toll from road accidents in Thailand is high and police are eager to make an example of people who are caught red handed. plus, even if you have travel insurance, any policy will be void if you are driving while intoxicated. it’s not worth the risk when songtaews and motorbike taxis are abundant in Pattaya, and elsewhere in Bangkok there are so many taxis even in remote locations you will never have to wait for a ride.

we encourage you to enjoy yourself in Pattaya but always know your own limits or you too might find yourself in the newspaper!!!
