The situation has been somewhat changing over the last couple of months however most bars are now back to normal operation. Opening times are around 1pm however this is a soft opening with no music playing and street casual outfits being worn. Some customers actually prefer this as it is quieter and there is no loud music making it easier to talk freely. The atmosphere is more relaxed and you can order a drink in peace. As the day progresses to 5-6pm the music is turned on and girls change into the more evocative outfits that Soi 6 is famous for. Most bars are open until 1am, however, many owners will dim the lights and music and let you keep drinking if you wish to continue until later.
These measures are designed to present a more acceptable face to daytime visitors such as Chinese tour groups who make their way through. The idea being that confining some activities to nighttime is more acceptable to the authorities. This is the case with Walking Street although this year many bars have started at 7pm when in the past it would be 8pm or later.
