There has been some stories in the media lately about African women being lured to Thailand on the promise of making fast cash. Such ladies have often been seen around Bangkok especially in the Sukhumvit road hotspots of Nana and Asoke, as well as many other nationalities seeking to ply the trade, not only the well-known Nigerian and Indian salesmen. Pattaya is no exception with people coming from as far flung places as Madagascar and Uzbekistan in attempts to find fortune. Simply ply Beach Road or venture a little further down Walking Street and you can usually find the more exotic flavours such as Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya and all manner of African nationalities represented. Some of these ladies have been trafficked to Thailand under false pretenses.
Law enforcement in Pattaya sporadically focuses on these ladies but the usual penalty is a night in jail, fine and then being released. It is more lucrative to repeatedly issue fines. As is common in many countries dark skinned Africans receive more attention and harrasment from local law enforcement than other groups. They can often be found hanging out opposite ibar. Many people associate Africa with AIDS and other diseases, theft and stealing, but it is up to the individual to make a choice about the level of risk they are prepared to take.
We would always recommend taking standard safety precautions and as these foreign nationals do not have legitimate ID may be refused entry to hotels, it is highly recommended not to go to an unknown location where you could be mugged or ambushed.
