It is currently the best time of year to meet Thai university students in Pattaya. In the last two years the term dates have been January to May (break in June, July) and then August to December, as this is more common in ASEAN countries. The ‘old system’ has the break from March until June, because the hottest months of April, May are better to not teach. The Rajabhat universities and nine Rajamangala universities of technology are now reverting to the old system. In a survey most students and staff liked the old system because it means that they are not in class during the hottest months of the year. The advantage for tourists is that it means these students are on break during the low season creating an extra labour pool at a time when the market might otherwise dry up.
So although these months are ‘low season’ in Pattaya, and across Thailand, you are more likely to find students working to get extra money on their summer break. In Pattaya this means that some girls will do a 10 day contract at a gogo bar, and in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, there will be more sideliners around looking for extra cash. This can be good because many Thai universities are teaching English so it is easier to communicate. If you are lucky you may even find some majoring in Business English or similar who can speak fluently and act as your translator. But remember these girls are more likely to be part-timers rather than hardened bar girls so calibrate your expectations accordingly, hi so girls can be very finicky and have expensive tastes..
