Police and army raid SOI 6: 26 February 2017

Update; please read our new coverage here “Police and army continue crackdown”

New photos have emerged on Pattaya police social media of raids conducted at 20.00 on February 26th 2017. The post stated police and army officers checked the bars on soi 6 as part of an anti-prostitution push. Officers of the police and military conducted checks of licencing, the venues itself, and whether the rooms at the bar were being used for the purposes of people smuggling or prostitution. As you can see in the photos there are uniformed police officers from Chonburi provincial policy, Pattaya police, and Thai army soldiers in camoflage uniforms taking part in the raids.

As you can see in the photos several bars on soi 6 were focused upon on the raid, including Kiss Kool, Red Point and others. At this time it does not seem that the police shut the actual bars down, just conducted a spot check and afterwards left. Still I would not want to be inside at the time of a raid. This raid comes just days after the police swept Beach Road rounding up mostly foreigners.

The official line continues to be that Pattaya is a beautiful and safe place for tourists. A tourism ministry official is quoted as saying:

“Pattaya has had some problems but it is a great place and a very important place for the tourism industry. We want it to continue to develop into the future.

“There is nothing to worry about,” he added. “Pattaya is a quality place that is of a world standard”.

The Bangkok post has also reported what the police have to say about this

Pol Col Apichai Krobpetch, the Pattaya police superintendent, told Spectrum that Pattaya is not a hub for the sex trade. He was upset about the British media’s stories, insisting they were fabricated.

“There is no such thing as prostitution in Pattaya,” says Col Apichai. “Where did they get the figure of 27,000 sex workers in Pattaya? Anyone can make up this information.

“We are working very hard to keep these issues under control. We patrol every night to make sure that there are no sex workers on the streets. We make sure that all the bars follow the law and we keep our eyes on every entertainment venue and beer bar.

“Thai ladies having sex with foreigners is their personal issue. If they like each other, I don’t see anything wrong with what they do behind closed doors.

“As the police chief in charge of this area, I can guarantee that Pattaya is still a safe and beautiful place to visit.”

So if this is the official line, then if you were to theoretically take a lady to your private hotel room, then there would not be any problem. The takeaway model is how many bars operate. It would seem to be that the major problem is with having “short time” rooms on site in the bars that is causing a major issue. TO play safe it would be advisable to return “behind closed doors” as the police chief has said to do. Most hotels in Pattaya have no issue with a guest bringing a friend back to their room.
